Call Triple Zero to report a fire |
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Youth WeekRural Fire ExpoThe
9 Rural Fire Brigades in the Ipswich Local Authority are comprised of
approximately 220 volunteers
from the Rural Community. The majority are landholders in their own
right and have been together over many years as a Brigade to protect their
patch. Today
the volunteers are reaching the older age group where retirement is talked about
but in many cases can’t be undertaken as the youth of the area are growing up
and leaving for better education and better paid jobs in the work force than if
they stayed at home and worked the family property. Some Brigades have attracted
some urban residents to be part of their Brigade structure, but are restricted
in some ways because of the response time to Brigade locations and Rural Fire
Stations. The
stations are not manned like our Urban counterparts but are summoned via a
paging system from Firecom Southeast. Crews as required proceed to the reported
fire and give a situation report back to Firecom. If more resources are needed
then Firecom activates more Brigade members, vehicles and other Brigades to
assist. All Volunteer undergo Fire Management Level 1 training, which is a
National Accredited Course for Certificate II Public Safety. Some members go
further with training especially crew leaders and officers. Other
courses are Incident Management, Brigade Management, and Certificate IV
Workplace Training and Assessment if required for Brigade Training Officers. Ipswich
Group Rural Fire Brigade has joined forces with the 9 Brigades to lead the way
in fostering an Expo. This Expo has come about with a grant from the Ipswich
City Council to host an activity during Youth Week. The
Youth of the region will be targeted to come and see what volunteering in a
Rural Fire Brigade is all about. We
also hope it will open up an avenue to new property owners as well within the
local authority area to come and see what Rural Fire Brigades are all about. We
will also introduce you to the workings of an Incident Management Team.
This is the strategy used by Rural
Fires for management of an incident, and use resources to the best capacity
within the Local authority before requesting resources from another Group or
Local Authority area. The Incident Management Team may report up the line to the
Incident Control Centre (ICC) for the Shire/Local Authority, who in turn reports
to the Regional Fire Control Centre (RFCC) who then talks with the State
Operations Control Centre (SOCC) We
